Mayor Requests Legacy Funds For Riverfront Development

SWA/City of Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry and several stakeholders provided an update on the city’s riverfront development plans at the Wells Street Bridge on Monday.

Mayor Henry is asking Fort Wayne’s Legacy Joint Funding Committee for $10 million to cover half the cost of the first phase of riverfront construction and development.

There is currently $40 million in the Legacy Fund, and that money can only be spent with committee and city council approval.

In September, city council voted to temporarily freeze Legacy spending until the mayor’s office provided a concrete funding request for the riverfront’s first phase.

Henry says a project like the riverfront is why the Legacy Fund was created, noting Parkview Field as the start of downtown’s revitalization eight years ago.

“Courtyard by Marriott, the Harrison, the expansion of the Grand Wayne Center, the renovation of the library, the Ash building, Skyline Tower,” said Henry. “All of these were part of a strategic process all of us have been working on for years.”

“This is the next step in creating Fort Wayne, Indiana,” he said.

The Legacy Committee will meet on Wednesday, November 9 to discuss the funding and approve or deny the mayor’s request.

If approved, the request will go before city council on November 22. Henry’s timeline suggests the funding process, if approved, could be completed by mid-December.
