Tritch Pushes Back On Banks Vote For Tax Overhaul

Democratic third district congressional candidate Courtney Tritch held a news conference Monday to address the federal tax overhaul.

The conference was held in response to an article written by Brian Francisco in Sunday’s Journal Gazette, which surveyed local members of Congress on their votes for the tax overhaul. In particular, she noted third district representative Jim Banks’ response to elimination of two tax credits -- the Federal Historic Tax Credit Program and New Market Tax Credit Program.

A Banks spokesperson told the Gazette he “has not taken a position on that specific issue, but he strongly supports efforts to pass tax reform and lower tax rates.”

Tritch says Banks’ lack of a position on those credits indicates a disconnect between himself and what’s happening in his district. She cited a study conducted by the state:

“The biggest economic development issue facing our state right now is population growth; we are not attracting the people we need, the talent we need for our businesses,” said Tritch. “So why are we eliminating programs that are working to confront our biggest economic issue?”

Tritch says she doesn’t see tax reform and economic development as a partisan issue, and adds that projects like The Landing and the GE campus redevelopment are funded in part by these tax credits.
