Fort Wayne’s City Utilities will begin Phase 1 of a two-phase water main replacement project on more than a mile of water main early next week.
The replacement will begin Tuesday, April 23, and will cause lane restrictions to a heavily-traveled Fort Wayne route.
The outside southbound lane of North Clinton from Grove Street to Dalgren Avenue will be closed, a distance of about ¼ of a mile. There will still be access to businesses on that route and work on the pipes will progress north from there.
In June 2018, Fort Wayne City Council approved an annual 5.8% rate hike on water over the next five years, in an effort to bring in revenue for an overhaul of more than 70 miles of pipes. This replacement effort is part of that project; the pipes being replaced have experienced 40 breaks in the last ten years.
Phase II is awaiting approval from the Board of Public Works.
