Bulk item collections have resumed around Fort Wayne today, but some limitations remain in place amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Residents are limited to one item per week. Furniture items like desks, sofas and mattresses as well as non-Freon appliances like microwaves, ovens and washing machines can be picked up.
Fort Wayne’s City Utilities department asks residents to place an item near their garbage carts to have it collected “within a few days of their regular garbage collection day.” The department adds there is no need to call in a bulk item.
Not every item is eligible for collection, however; state law prevents computers and TVs, toilets, refrigerators and glass windows and doors from being collected in bulk by the City.
If you need Freon items or electronics picked up, the following services are available:
- For Freon items like refrigerators, Wisman’s Appliances, A-1 Mark’s Appliances and Omnisource may pick them up for a fee, possibly pay if the item is in working condition.
- For electronics live TVs and computers, Omnisource, in addition to Bunn, Advanced Disposal and Republic Services, may take items for a fee.
And residents can contact Republic and bring items to a landfill themselves during working hours.
Despite restarting bulk collections, the Solid Waste department tells residents the policy to collect only city-issued garbage and recycling carts is still in place until further notice.
