2020 Primary Election Numbers Official In Northeast Indiana

Following several days of tabulating the numbers, the results for 2020’s primary election in Indiana are official in Allen County and across Northeast Indiana.

CORRECTION: In the original version of this story, it stated that John Stoffel won the District 50 race over Daniel Leonard. Stoffel won the Huntington County vote, but Leonard took the bulk of the Allen County vote to win the race. The story has been changed to reflect this.

Fort Wayne Community Schools’ $130 million REPAIR 2020 referendum easily won approval from voters, holding steady since Election Night to a 74-26 victory. It’s the third in a series of funding measures offering quality-of-life improvements to FWCS district schools, with the first two passing in 2012 and 2016.

In the Republican race for county coroner, Dr. Jon Brandenberger earned nearly twice as many votes as his opponent Joel Nagel, taking that race 66-34. With no Democrats on the other side of the ballot, Brandenberger will run uncontested to replace current coroner Dr. Craig Nelson, who will meet his limit of two terms.

And two-term, 3rd District Republican U.S. representative Jim Banks handily defeated Chris Magiera (muh-JER-uh) with 87% of the Allen County vote. Those numbers did not differ much in other Northeast Indiana counties, with Banks winning the entire district by an 85-15 vote margin.

Around Northeast Indiana, incumbent Republican senator Susan Glick won the state senate District 13 primary, defeating Jeffrey Wible 54-46. In Huntington County’s District 50 race, incumbent Republican state representative Daniel Leonard defeated John Stoffel; Leonard will face off against Democrat Jorge Fernandez, who ran unopposed in his primary.

Allen County saw a voter turnout of just under 10% on Tuesday. Mail-in voting became the primary choice for most residents in the county, due to state expansion of the program and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. 89% of all ballots mailed out were returned by Election Day.
