Allen County Democrats Select New Leadership

Allen County’s Democratic Party announced a new leadership structure over the weekend.

Derek Camp was selected as the party chair, while Sheila Curry-Campbell will serve as vice-chair. The party also chose MaryClare Akers as secretary, and Michael Fuller as treasurer.

Camp has prior campaign experience for Indiana Democrats and recently formed Campfire Strategies, LLC, which focuses on field and targeting strategies on state and local campaigns. Curry Campbell was elected to represent the 1st District on Allen County Council in 2020 but has also served as treasurer and former president of local NAACP branch 3049.

Camp has big goals for the party, focusing on his “Allen County Roadmap” for guidance the next four years. The plan has five prongs, like expanding organizing efforts, creating a get out-the-vote program, increasing fundraising capabilities, developing a candidate mentorship program, and establishing a focused message from the local party.

Camp says he and the three newly-selected leaders are ready to hit the ground running.

“Sheila will be taking the lead and organizing our voter registration and community engagement efforts,” Camp said. “And our secretary MaryClare Akers and I are working on building up our precinct chair organization and making sure they are getting the training. And treasurer Mike Fuller and I are going to be building up our fundraising capability so we can focus on these other efforts.”

The party reorganizes its leadership every four years, in conjunction with the state party. All four were selected in a vote by the county precinct committee members on Sunday.
