The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo hosted an Animal Enrichment and Training Day on Thursday to allow guests to learn about the behaviors and training of its animals.

Guests at the zoo were able to walk around the exhibits and stop to learn about how the staff keep animals engaged in and learning healthy behaviors.

Stations allowed guests to forage for treats, respond to clicker commands and use feeder puzzles animals at the zoo also use.

Samuel Fromholt is a public relations intern at the zoo. He said the enrichment day has been happening for years to showcase what zookeepers do for animals.

“Enrichment is a very important part of how we take care of the animals here," Fromholt said. "It helps bring out their most healthy behaviors and helps keep them active and having a healthy life while they’re here at the zoo.”

The day also had a schedule of enrichment showcases for certain animals; such as frozen juice inside of bamboo for the orangutans to encourage them to use their teeth to break through the bamboo.

Fromholt said the event days at the zoo are popular and kids enjoy the hands-on activities while they walk between exhibits.
