The former principal of New Haven Middle School faces felony sex crime charges related to the abuse of a former New Haven High School student.

According to court documents filed Thursday, Peter Allen Downey, 58, is informally charged with two Class D felony counts of child seduction for conduct occurring in 2008.

Downey is accused of having a sexual relationship with the teen when she was then 16 years old, having sex with her on multiple occasions at multiple locations including the old middle school building, his mother’s home, and area hotels.

He impregnated the victim when she was 17 and then drove her to Chicago in September 2008 to obtain an abortion.

Downey ceased contact with the teen in February 2013.

Downey’s ex-wife, the victim and witnesses provided corroborating evidence including calendars, medical records, and phone records, according to court documents.

The charges filed carry a penalty of up to a year in prison. He was arrested Wednesday, according to court documents.

He remains out of jail on $12,500 bond after an initial hearing on the informal charges Thursday. Another hearing is scheduled in Allen Superior Court next week.

According to the Indiana Department of Education, Downey still has an active teaching and administrators license.
