A surplus of more than $1 million in Allen County Sheriff’s Sale funds have gone to property owners who lost homes to foreclosure.

The money is the difference between what was owed to financial institutions which foreclosed on the properties, and the amount collected during the sale of the property in Sheriff’s Sale.

Allen Superior Court says in a press release that it began the program just under a year ago, and reached the milestone last week.

More than $500,000 is still available for return to former owners or heirs, and court officials remain committed to helping find where it belongs.

According to Allen Superior Judge Jennifer DeGroote who handles foreclosure cases, the money can help people get on a fresh path after the loss of a home.

Amounts returned to former property owners or their heirs ranged from less than $200 to nearly $69,000.

There are 59 foreclosure cases with surpluses remaining, according to the release.
