Levan Scott Academy broke ground Wednesday on an addition that will double the size of the school. WBOI’s Ella Abbott was on site.

A group of students from first through fifth grade helped symbolically break ground in front of the school, with teachers and administrators in attendance.

Levan Scott principal Carrie Kennedy said the expansion, which will add 19 new classrooms, will allow them to serve more students in the community who are currently at neighboring schools.

“You know, it’s really nice when you live in a community that you can walk to school, you can bike to school, you can go to the events because you’re close by,” she said.

In addition to new classrooms, the school will also add a media center, cafeteria and other support spaces, as well as parking and a new parent pick-up lane.

Weigand Construction Company is managing the 17 million dollar project, which was approved by voters as part of the 2020 School Building Basic Renewal/Restoration and Safety Project.

The addition is set to be complete in 2024.
