Some of the 48 women to be profiled for the initiative join AVOW's founders at Heritage Park Tuesday, August 25, 2020.

Advancing Voices of Women (AVOW) announced their inaugural Profiles of Public Service Tuesday with 48 profiles of women in positions of leadership in Allen County.

The women represent more than 150 local, state and national boards with a focus on organizations that offer public services -- from local government to faith leaders.

Rachel Tobin-Smith is one of the founders of AVOW. She says the announcement comes on the heels of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave millions of women the right to vote.

“We are now all able to vote and raise our voices. But there are other ways for us to raise our voices.”

AVOW says these profiles hope to further advance the voices of women by advocating for their appointments to boards and commissions. Currently, Allen County has 15 women holding board seats out of 81 seats.

The profiles will be available at AVOW’s website, where they are also calling for women all across northeast Indiana to add their own profiles and be part of the initiative.
