The Allen County Health Department issued a warning Friday regarding the evidence of the continued spread of COVID-19 in the community.
A number of deaths in Allen County were reported this past week, and hospitalizations were up, according to the department.
Allen County also shows a large spike in cases, when compared per capita with other counties around the state. The increase corresponds to Gov. Eric Holcomb’s decision to reopen the state in early May.
As restrictions have eased, case counts have gone up.
The area has also been the scene of many protests in recent days, and while masks have been worn by some marchers and police, others have not been wearing masks. Social distancing, handwashing and other sanitary practices are not easily observed in crowds.
Officials around the world have expressed concern about another rise in COVID-19 cases in the wake of protests stemming from the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis on Memorial Day.
In total, Allen County has 77 deaths from COVID-19, and 1,810 positive cases of the illness caused by the novel coronavirus.
Elsewhere in northeast Indiana, Noble County has 278 positive cases and 21 deaths. LaGrange County has 128 cases. Kosciusko County has 205.
