The name and opening seas0n of Electric Works’ highly-touted public market in Fort Wayne were revealed early Thursday morning.

Union Street Market -- a tribute to “the earliest days of the General Electric campus” -- is slated to open in fall 2022. 20-plus merchants, which already includes Joseph Decuis and Conjure Coffee, will be open daily and also serve as the permanent home of the Fort Wayne’s Farmers Market.

The mission of Union Street Market is to highlight “a range of regionally sourced foods and beverages in a historic setting,” and to support local farmers and producers while enhancing community wellness.

The market will cover 37,000 square feet on the Electric Works grounds, with indoor and outdoor infrastructure spaces available to merchants to best serve their customers.

Electric Works has also brought on Ted Spitzer as Director of Market Planning and Development. Spitzer has worked on many public markets across the country, including those in cities such as Lexington, Baltimore and Philadelphia, and the hope is for Fort Wayne’s market to emulate the “most successful market halls” in the country.

The economic development agreement for phase one of the Electric Works project finally closed in January, and construction crews went to work on the campus shortly after. With the Middle Waves music festival postponed until 2022 due to COVID-19, crews will continue work on the property and are on track for a summer or fall 2022 grand opening.
