Lutheran Health Network celebrated the groundbreaking of its forthcoming hospital in downtown Fort Wayne Wednesday afternoon.
The facility, which will be known as Lutheran Downtown Hospital, will be located directly across from Lutheran Health Network’s current St. Joseph Hospital. Upon completion, the old facility will be razed in favor of additional parking. In May, Lutheran released an artist rendering of what the new hospital should look like.
Lutheran CEO Mark Medley -- newly appointed to the position in May -- says a new hospital in the heart of downtown will allow the provider to serve the community more effectively.
“We’re here to provide high quality health care for every patient, every time, when they come through our doors at every location," Medley said. "And we will be very glad to do the same here. We all have so much to look forward to.”
Mayor Tom Henry and several other public officials and stakeholders spoke before the ceremonial groundbreaking took place. The facility is expected to be completed by late 2021, and open for patients the following spring.
