Lutheran Finalizes Exterior Design For New Hospital

Lutheran Health Network

The design of the forthcoming Lutheran Downtown Hospital has been finalized, and an artist rendering of the future building is now public.

In December, Lutheran Health Network and the City of Fort Wayne announced plans to construct a brand new facility in the heart of downtown, located across from the current St. Joseph Hospital. It will accommodate 60 beds to start before expanding to 100 over time.

The design features more windows for natural light, which Lutheran says “enhances a healing environment.” It also calls for a mix of brick, stone and metal panels, as well as an “exterior insulation finish system,” which would enhance the outside textures.

While artist renderings from architecture firm MKM were published the day of the announcement, the new hospital’s ultimate design had yet to be finalized. Tuesday, employees, board members and stakeholders helped approve what will now be the exterior look of Lutheran Downtown Hospital.

Lutheran Downtown Hospital will be five stories high and cover 188,000 square feet. Construction is likely to begin later this summer; completion is expected by fall 2021, with the first patients being served in spring 2022.
