Monday Night Protest Without Arrests

Provided by Mike Durbin

A fourth night of protests at the Allen County Courthouse Green ended at 11 p.m. without incident, according to Fort Wayne Police.

A peaceful 9-hour protest without arrest came after three days of hours of conflict between angry protesters and dozens of police officers armed with tear gas, smoke bombs and batons.

The protests began on Friday evening, part of a now-global movement protesting police brutality in the wake of the Memorial Day killing of Minnesota-resident George Floyd. In the course of the first three days, around 100 people were arrested on mostly misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and refusal to leave the scene of an emergency.

One individual suffered a traumatic eye injury on Saturday, attributed in statements by witnesses and the police to a teargas canister.

In a written statement issued late Monday night, police officials said protesters dispersed around 11 p.m. after announcements that the courthouse park was closing.

“The Fort Wayne Police Department is grateful for everyone present tonight and for their cooperation and peaceful protest. Thank you,” the statement read.
