More than a haircut: A conversation with founder of WeFAM

Williams believes that building self esteem and positivity is the key to empowerment.

Fort Wayne native Juan Williams,  a barber with purpose and a strong dedication to his community, has combined forces with seventeen other shop owners to provide hope for at risk members of the population through an organization he founded and heads up aptly called We Fam.

Besides the grooming services, which are distributed in the form of unique vouchers, the group hosts regular meetings for its young members called Barbershop Conversations.

For insight on his beliefs and the scope of his commitment to the cause, WBOI's Julia Meek sat down with Williams to learn his motivation for establishing the program, how it works and what it means to those being served.

You can connect with Williams, learn more about the program and become involved at the WeFam website.

A Fort Wayne native, Julia is a radio host, graphic artist, and community volunteer, who has contributed to NIPR both on- and off-air for forty years. Besides being WBOI's arts & culture reporter, she currently co-produces and hosts Folktales and Meet the Music.
