Storm Update: Fort Wayne/Allen County State of Emergency Lifted, But Caution Advised

The City of Fort Wayne and Allen County are letting the State of Emergency declared Monday to expire at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday. But they're leaving a Winter Weather Travel Watch in its place.

The advisory means residents are being encouraged to stay off the roads, many of which are still hazardous, but essential travel will be allowed for things like getting to and from work.

City and county offices will be open on Tuesday, along with state government facilities, which open at 10:00 a.m.

On Monday, the National Weather Service of Northern Indiana announced Fort Wayne had reached a new daily record low of -13 degrees, beating the old record set in 1970.

Forecasters still expect temperatures to stay below zero for all of Tuesday in Fort Wayne and across the region, with wind chill readings potentially dropping to -30 degrees or colder.

A full statement from the City of Fort Wayne--including information on warming stations and shelters--can be found below:

State of Emergency/Winter Weather Travel Warning to be lifted at 6 p.m. Winter Weather Travel Watch in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday Fort Wayne,Ind. – The State of Emergency and Winter Weather Travel Warning for Fort Wayne, Allen County, New Haven, and Woodburn will be lifted at 6 p.m. However, a Winter Weather Travel Watch for Fort Wayne, Allen County, New Haven, and Woodburn will be in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday. A watch means that conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. During a watch local travel advisory, only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations is recommended. Drivers should be aware that conditions are hazardous. Please drive slowly and have emergency supplies in vehicles, along with a cell phone. Though the travel status has been reduced from a Warning to a Watch, many county roads will continue to be affected by winds and drifting which will make some of those roads impassable. And while main city streets have been cleared, they are still slick and will remain that way with the dangerously cold temperatures. The public's help in staying off of streets and roads will allow crews to continue with plowing operations to allow for fire, law enforcement, and ambulance services to meet the needs of the public. As a reminder, Indiana has a standardized county travel status process in place. A guide can be found at the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's website. Three shelters are open to provide a place for individuals in need of shelter. The shelters will remain open until further notice. Plans could change as needed.
