Indiana and 11 other states are taking the Environmental Protection Agency to court over proposed regulations limiting carbon emissions from coal plants.
The EPA’s proposed regulations, announced in June, seek to reduce carbon emissions 30 percent by the year 2030. Proponents hail it as a measure that would stimulate enormous investment and job growth.
But Governor Mike Pence says 80 percent of Indiana’s energy comes from coal power plants, meaning the federal agency’s proposal would be devastating for the Hoosier economy. Pence says the state is determined to use every option to prevent the EPA from what he calls a proposal that disregards the rule of law by bypassing Congress.
The state joins West Virginia, Alabama, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Wyoming in asking a federal court to stop the agency from finalizing its proposed rule.
