Interview: Guy Raz, Host of NPR's TED Radio Hour

Guy Raz loves big ideas. And he’s not afraid of taking big risks here and there.

Now the host of NPR’s TED Radio Hour, Raz came to the show in 2013 after its pilot season with an eye on reimagining what it could be.

Featuring intricate production and in-depth interviews with famous and infamous TED veterans, the vision Raz and his producers shared paid off. TED Radio Hour became the fastest-growing public radio program in history up to that point, and a widely-downloaded podcast.

But it wasn’t the first time he was tasked with shaking up a public radio show.

When Raz was named host of the NPR newsmagazine Weekend All Things Considered in 2009, he and his producers transformed the sound of the show, creating WATC’s “cover story” format. The change caught the attention of stations and listeners alike, becoming a staple of the program.

As TED Radio Hour starts a new season this month, WBOI’s Sean Bueter got a chance to speak to Raz about the program’s impact, the host’s favorite TED Talks, and how working on the show has changed him.

You can listen to NPR's TED Radio Hour Sundays at 2:00 p.m. and Mondays at 7:00 p.m. on 89.1 WBOI.
