Allen County Could Face More Low Voter Turnout

Tuesday is primary election day in Allen County and across the state.

Indiana made national news last year for its low voter turnout in the general election, which included statehouse and congressional seats.

Voter turnout is historically low for primary elections, and even worse for municipals.

Nationally, municipal turnout wavers around 20 percent. Back in 2011, less than 13 percent of those registered to vote in Allen County showed up at the polls. That’s about twenty four thousand people.

So, what can we expect this time around?

Andy Downs from the nonpartisan Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics says likely more of the same. He says those that do come out are very dedicated members of a particular party.

But Downs says, “we also though have a fair number of people who will participate because they know someone who’s running. Because remember we’re talking about fairly small areas when we’re talking about district-level offices.”

Polls are open until 6pm Tuesday. You can find your polling location at indianavoters.com
