Controlled Burn At Eagle Marsh Causes Smoke In Southwest Fort Wayne

People driving past Eagle Marsh Nature Preserve in Fort Wayne may notice smoke during a controlled burn today until around 4 or 5 p.m.

The director of preserves and programs at Little River Wetlands Project, Betsy Yankowiak, says many people see the smoke and call emergency personnel, thinking there is an uncontrolled fire. But Yankowiak says the controlled burns help manage invasive plant species and establish native plants.

Yankowiak says they burn about 100 acres each year, but Eagle Marsh is especially visible, located at the junction of I-69 and Jefferson Boulevard.
