Downs Survey Highlights Most Important Issues For Hoosier Voters

In WBOI’s interviews with the candidates for Indiana’s 3rd District House seat, both Republican incumbent Jim Banks and Democratic challenger Courtney Tritch agreed that health care is likely the most important issue for Indiana voters.

This is reflected in a survey of nearly 1,100 registered voters from the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics. The poll asked Hoosier voters the most important issues they see facing the United States and Indiana itself ahead of Tuesday’s election.

Twenty-two percent of voters said health care is the most important issue facing the United States; 17 percent said economy and jobs; and 13 percent said immigration to round out the top three. For Indiana, 26 percent said the condition of roads and highways is their most important issue; 22 percent said the economy and jobs; and 17 percent stated health care.

In the context of Indiana’s U.S. Senate race, 33 percent of Democratic incumbent Joe Donnelly supporters said health care is their most important issue; the economy was second, at 11 percent. Supporters of Republican challenger Mike Braun leaned more toward economy and immigration -- both 24 percent -- as their most critical platforms.

As for Libertarian challenger Lucy Brenton, health care, federal spending and the economy came in as the three most important issues. Undecided voters said they were most concerned with the economy, at 21 percent of respondents.
