Updates at the Allen County Health Department Board meeting earlier this week confirmed an outbreak of Hepatitis A in Allen County, with a total of 52 confirmed cases.
A national outbreak had been declared in late 2017. The state of Indiana confirmed a total of 915 cases. The disease primarily affected white men between the ages of 21 and 40.
Allen County responded to the outbreak with free, publicly funded vaccines in high risk areas, such as homeless shelters, jails and STD clinics.
No new cases of Hepatitis A have been reported in nearly two months. Hep A is contracted by close contact with others with the virus, sexual contact, drug use and other causes.
