4th of July Safety Tips For Pets

The Fourth of July is Thursday, and fireworks could make this a stressful week for any dogs, cats or other critters in the home. Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control is urging residents to use extra caution with their pets during the holiday week.

With temperatures expected to stay in the 90s throughout the week, outdoor conditions may be even more dangerous for runaway pets than usual. Residents are advised to keep their pets inside an air-conditioned space unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Make sure all collars and microchips have updated address and contact information, and outdoor gates, doors and entries are secured so pets don’t sneak out. Pets should remain in the home; keeping pets in hot cars or taking them to celebrations or parades could violate numerous state and local laws.

Pet owners are also advised to keep pets away from swimming pools and picnic foods, as chemicals from either can be toxic for animals.

If a runaway pet is found, residents are encouraged to help shelter the animal or reported to Animal Care & Control.

Animal Care & Control will be closed on July 4th, and operating with shortened business hours on Friday, July 5th from 11 am to 6 pm.
