A 29-year-old Huntington man was shot to death Wednesday afternoon by an officer with the Huntington County Sheriff’s Department.

According to the Indiana State Police, police responded to Yeoman Park in Huntington to investigate a report of a suicidal male armed with a handgun.

When the multiple officers located the man about an hour later, he ran from police. During the foot pursuit through the park, there was an exchange of gunfire, and the man, Vincent Michael Smith, was shot. In spite of the efforts of the officers at the scene and paramedics, Smith died from his injuries.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Indiana State Police. At the conclusion of the investigation, the case will be turned over to the Huntington County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
