Northeast Indiana has less than 10 percent of its ICU capacity left as of Wednesday due to the continued spread of COVID-19 in the region.

And officials with Parkview Health Network said the surge of COVID cases has caused a strain on hospitals in their network, which is in most northeast Indiana counties.

There were 697 new cases of the disease reported in the area on Wednesday, with five new deaths. The area’s 7-day positivity rate held at 11.4 percent.

Deaths were reported in Kosciusko, Noble, Steuben and Wabash counties. No area county but LaGrange saw less than 20 new cases reported Wednesday, and Allen County saw 315 new cases.

Statewide, the numbers continue to climb as well, with more than 5,000 new cases reported and hospitalizations now up to 2,048, according to the Indiana Department of Health.
