Fort Wayne Community Schools’ Career Academy held an opening for a new student-run restaurant inside of the schools’ cafeteria Wednesday. WBOI’s Ella Abbott has more.

Students and administrators gathered at the Career Academy to cut the ribbon for the district’s new Barr Street Bistro, a student-run restaurant open to the public.

The name is an homage to the school’s old Barr Street Cafe, but the bistro is meant to accommodate students' schedules more.

Ann Applegate is a culinary arts instructor at the Career Academy. She said she became emotional as one of her students cut the ribbon Wednesday morning.

“It’s a dream come true, I think, for a lot of us," Applegate said.

The bistro offers seniors the opportunity to learn how to open and run their own restaurant. Applegate said students chose the logo, created the menu and came up with the recipes.

Jessica Crockett is a senior at Homestead High School. She said creating the bistro was a lot of work, but the skills she learned are invaluable.

“If I wanted to open my own restaurant, I will know exactly how to do it,” Crockett said.

Barr Street Bistro is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11:15 to 12:45.
