Breaking News:

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry has passed away after a brief battle with cancer.

Long-time classical host Stan Whippo has died at 94

ANDY LAVERGHETTA
Stan Whippo, from his perch behind the mic, has entertained listeners with his classical music offerings for over twenty years.

Stan Whippo passed away October 14, 2021.

Stan hosted the live, four-hour classical music show Matinee every weekday on Classical 94.1 WBNI, for more than twenty years, before retiring in the fall of 2018.

As part of her Behind The Mic series, WBOI's Julia Meek had an opportunity to talk with him about what classical music meant to him, and how it drove his passion for public radio.

Today we revisit that conversation, and on behalf of all the staff, volunteers, and listeners in our community, we remember Stan Whippo for sharing his music, humor, and friendship with us over the airwaves these many years.

89.1 WBOI will share a community remembrance of Stan Whippo the week of Thanksgiving.

A Fort Wayne native, Julia is a radio host, graphic artist, and community volunteer, who has contributed to NIPR both on- and off-air for forty years. Besides being WBOI's arts & culture reporter, she currently co-produces and hosts Folktales and Meet the Music.
