April 14: COVID Hospitalizations Up To Highest Levels In Nearly Two Months

Screenshot of Indiana Department of Health

COVID-19 hospitalizations took a noticeable jump up, both statewide and locally, over the course of the past few days amid rising numbers of the illness.

Statewide, there are more than 900 people hospitalized with the illness for the first time since Feb. 20.

In northeast Indiana, the number hospitalized stood at 84, also the most since Feb. 20.

No new deaths were reported in northeast Indiana on Monday, and the area’s 7-day positivity rate stood at 5.7 percent.

Only LaGrange, DeKalb, Huntington and Adams counties are in the state’s “blue” category for COVID spread. The designation is the safest for community spread, based on 7-day positivity numbers as cases per 100,000.

The rest of the area is in the “yellow”, the state’s second best rating.

Last week, Gov. Eric Holcomb’s mask mandate expired, and it is now up to localities, businesses and organizations to decide if they want to require face coverings for entrance.

On Sunday, the Noble County Health Department announced COVID-19 vaccinations, both Moderna and Johnson & Johnson would be available at the Noble County Public Library in Albion.

In a press release, Noble County Health Officer Dr. Terry Gaff said the effort is to increase vaccinations among the county’s adult population. Only one in five Noble County residents are vaccinated from the illness.

Statewide, nearly 26 percent of Hoosiers have been vaccinated.
