Members of Fort Wayne's sikh community gathered to honor the lives lost in the Indianapolis Fedex shooting on Saturday, April 24, 2021.

Members of Fort Wayne’s Sikh community gathered this weekend to honor the memory of the eight people killed during a shooting at a Fedex facility in Indianapolis on April 15.

The Sikh Temple in Fort Wayne organized the candlelight vigil on Saturday evening, bringing about 30 or 40 of its members together to pray and honor the victims of the shooting.

Eight people were killed when a gunman began shooting at a Fedex facility in Indianapolis earlier this month, and four of them were members of the Sikh community.

While none of the victims were from Fort Wayne, Simran Pal Singh who attended the vigil says that being such a minority community, it means that a tragedy anywhere, is a tragedy everywhere.

“So, we just wanted to commemorate and show solidarity amongst each other and show support that we’re all in it together, no matter where you come from or who you are,” Singh said.

Landon Porter, a representative from Congressman Jim Banks' (R-Columbia City) office also attended the vigil.

“Our hearts were broken when we heard of the tragedy and we are here with you, whatever you need we are here to support you,” Porter said.

The Indiana Sikh Outreach Mission in Fort Wayne released a statement at the vigil urging elected officials to take action on gun violence in the wake of another shooting.
