Screenshot of the Indiana Department of Health

Purdue Fort Wayne will be relaxing its face covering requirements beginning on June 28 as more and more of the population is vaccinated against COVID-19.

Face masks will no longer be required indoors for those fully vaccinated, and no longer required outside for anyone, according to a press release issued Monday. Masks have been required since May 2020 to combat the spread of COVID.

Vaccinated members of the PFW community may continue to wear face masks should they choose to do so, and school officials encourage everyone to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

There were a dozen new cases reported in the area on Monday from Sunday, and no new deaths.

Those between the ages of 40 to 49 in northeast Indiana remain the age group with the largest number infected with COVID-19, at 16.1 percent. Only 42.5 percent of that age group is vaccinated statewide.

There are 41 residents of northeast Indiana hospitalized with the illness.

LaGrange County’s vaccination rate inched upward again Monday, to 22.2 percent.

Allen County’s is the highest in the area, with 45 percent of the eligible population fully-vaccinated.
