From Dec. 23 until Saturday, there were about 1,680 new cases of COVID-19 reported in northeast Indiana.

A dozen deaths were reported as well, according to data released Sunday by the Indiana State Department of Health.

Those numbers came as the U.S. hit more than 100 deaths per 100,000 people, with roughly 332,000 deaths due to COVID-19.

Indiana’s trend line with regards to the spread of the disease has gone down for the past few days, after peaking about a week after Thanksgiving.

According to the Johns Hopkins University coronavirus resource center, Indiana’s statistics had been on a steady climb upward until Gov. Eric Holcomb clamped down on gatherings and mask usage in early November.

Northeast Indiana ICU capacity stands at 23.2 percent, with 25.8 percent of the critical care units occupied by COVID-19 patients. There are 270 COVID-19 hospitalizations in northeast Indiana.

Statewide, ICU capacity is at 27.6 percent, with 29.9 percent of the capacity taken up by COVID-19 patients. Hospitalizations are at 2,811, according to the Indiana State Department of Health.
