UAW Worker Discusses Anxiety, Purpose of Strike

United Auto Workers continued to strike against General Motors across the state on Thursday, going into the 5th week.

At the Fort Wayne Assembly Plant, GM workers in the picket like stood outside in cloudy October weather, amid news of GM officials meeting in Detroit to discuss a tentative contract, agreed on earlier this week. Workers went on strike in September seeking renegotiations on wages, healthcare and temporary workers’ benefits.

Chad, who asked his last name not be used in this story, spoke with WBOI’s Barb Anguiano, outside of the Fort Wayne plant where he works. Chad says while he hopes the strike ends soon, he understands why it’s necessary and is willing to strike as long as possible for his co-workers.

Members will begin voting on the tentative contract this weekend, with 8 days to ratify. The strike will continue until the new contract is finalized.
