A new middle school civics course will be required for Indiana students.

Plans for the three-year grant through the US Department of Education include creating extensive class resources and monthly professional development for teachers, a yearly symposium with national-level experts, and a summer Civic Learning Academy for both teachers and students.

Indiana’s middle school students will now be taught the foundations and function of government, and their role as citizens as part of a new civics curriculum.

Proposed civics education standards for middle school students will be discussed at a public a meeting Tuesday. Lawmakers and education leaders from across the state will meet to review a draft of the standards. Beginning in 2023, middle school students will be required to take one semester of civics before starting high school.
