WBOI Presents: Special Session Aftermath

In the late hours of Friday, Aug. 5, Republicans in Indiana’s General Assembly succeeded in passing a near-total abortion ban in the Hoosier State. It was the first state-led effort to severely restrict abortions to be signed into law by a governor since Roe v. Wade was overturned on June 24.

On this week’s episode of WBOI Presents, we’ll take a look at the final moments before it was signed by Governor Eric Holcomb, and try to parse where things go from here.

Later in the program, we’ll bring you a conversation with Allen County’s new health commissioner, and offer you the latest on the inflation relief proposal that was kicked around during the special session, as well.

This episode was produced by WBOI Content Director Zach Bernard, and Production Assistant Brittany Smith.

This program also featured reporting from our colleagues at Indiana Public Broadcasting, including Brandon Smith, Dylan Peers-McCoy, Farah Yousry, Mitch Legan, Steph Whiteside, Darian Benson, Violet Comber-Wilen, Elizabeth Gabriel, and Sydney Dauphinais, as well as Dan Gorenstein of the Tradeoffs podcast.

You also heard an Aug.t 8 segment from NPR’s Here & Now, which aired live on 89.1 WBOI that day; thank you to NPR’s Celeste Headlee for guiding the conversation.

Special thanks to Allen County Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Gutwein for his interview with the WBOI news team.

WBOI Presents is a weekly showcase from the WBOI news team and our friends at Indiana Public Broadcasting focused on the news, conversations and stories of Northeast Indiana and the Hoosier State.

You can hear WBOI Presents every Wednesday night at 7 p.m. and every Saturday morning at 7 a.m, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Zach joined 89.1 WBOI as a reporter and local host for All Things Considered, and hosted Morning Edition for the past few years. In 2022, he was promoted to Content Director.
