Celebrating the International Year of Indigenous Languages

Thanks to Encabo and Bischoff, Unesco's Conference at PFW connected our own community to the rest of the world.

The world's native languages are disappearing at an alarming rate, and Purdue Fort Wayne's Indigenous Language Center is working hard on a solution to this problem.

As part of Unesco's International Year of Indigenous Languages celebration, PFW hosted the 2019: Perspectives Conference in November, which  featured a variety of cultural activities and connections to participants from around the world.

Earlier this month, WBOI's Julia Meek sat down with PFW faculty members Mary Encabo and Shannon Bischoff to discuss the situation, its cultural impact, and how our community can affect a change on a local as well as global platform.

You can find more information at the Year of Indigenous Languages 2019: Perspective website.

A Fort Wayne native, Julia is a radio host, graphic artist, and community volunteer, who has contributed to NIPR both on- and off-air for forty years. Besides being WBOI's arts & culture reporter, she currently co-produces and hosts Folktales and Meet the Music.
