City of Fort Wayne to host public forum on proposed homeless resource center

The proposed location for the Anchor Resource Center puts it across the street from the Rescue Mission and near both Brightpoint and Matthew 25. Opponents of the project say it also puts it too close to St. Paul Lutheran School and the YMCA.

Mayor Sharon Tucker announced a public forum for the proposed Anchor Resource Center.

Republicans on Fort Wayne’s City Council refuse to move forward on the project until certain conditions are met–a public forum being one of them.

They have delayed voting on the financing for the low-barrier homeless services center at 333 E. Washington Boulevard until September.

At the last council meeting, they told the mayor that the city’s Engage portal that gathered more than 500 entries was not the same thing as a public forum.

The proposed location is in the same area of downtown as The Rescue Mission and other resources.

The forum will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. next Monday in the Calhoun Ballroom at the Grand Wayne Center.

It will be moderated by Tucker and the mayor’s Chief of Staff Andrew Downs.

In a press release announcing the event, Tucker says she hopes all nine council members will be in attendance.

She said the location is the right plan at the right time.
