Google will give $1.1 million to Fort Wayne City Utilities to improve water reuse and operations at the Three Rivers Filtration Plant.

According to a release Wednesday, it is part of a $10 million effort from the tech company to support water sources, infrastructure and access across the state.

Google has a data center on the southeast side of Fort Wayne. Residents around the area have expressed concern about the environmental impact of the facility, including its potential water use.

In the press release, Google officials say that as data centers continue to evolve, the company has an opportunity and a responsibility to protect community water resources.

The company has protected over 20 acres of wetland in Allen County to offset the wetland acreage impacted by the construction of the data center.

The city’s project will improve processes, causing more water to be reused. That will reduce the amount of water removed from the St. Joseph River by about 180 million gallons a year.
