On Friday, Fort Wayne announced they’ll be implementing their first bike share program in a partnership with Leadership Fort Wayne and Zagster.
25 cruiser bikes are now available to rent at five different locations around the city. Annual memberships can be purchased for $60. Rides are free for members during the first hour, and will then cost $3 for every additional hour.
Zagster is one of the top bike share providers nationwide and will operate the Fort Wayne system. Zagster spokesman John Williams says even though larger cities have benefitted most from bike shares, it’s time the smaller ones get in on the fun.
“There’s really no reason that cities of Fort Wayne’s size shouldn’t have, quote, ‘big city amenities,’" said Williams. "You know, the cost and technology is really bringing everything down, and who doesn’t want to ride a bike every once in awhile?”
Fort Wayne has committed $45,000 annually in Community Economic Development Income Tax funds for two years to start the Bike Share program. The City and Leadership Fort Wayne hopes to grow the bike share system by getting private sponsors.
