Democratic candidate for governor John Gregg made a campaign stop in Fort Wayne this weekend.
Former House Speaker Gregg talked to volunteers outside of DeBrand Fine Chocolates at the Jefferson Pointe shopping center on Saturday. He told volunteers that the key to winning the gubernatorial race against his opponent, Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb, is to get some Republicans to vote Democrat.
“We only win in Indiana if we get votes from independents and moderate Republicans,” Gregg said. “There are a lot of good independent voters out there, and there’s a lot of good, common sense-oriented Republicans, so reach out to them.”
Gregg lost by just over 3 percentage points when he ran against Republican Mike Pence in 2012. Gregg credits that loss with Pence’s predecessor’s popularity in the state.
“The last time, we were really running, as I tell people, against the record of Gov. Mitch Daniels,” he said. “Gov. Daniels was extremely popular with the type of individual, that moderate, independent-thinking Republican we have to have.”
Gregg talked about some of his platform points, including a state-funded pre-kindergarten program and increasing the state’s per capita income by attracting businesses to Indiana that pay above minimum wage.
