New York Times journalist and Fort Wayne native Charlie Savage spoke at IPFW Thursday about post-9/11 presidential power.
“What I mean by that are all the constellation of often controversial, often new and novel issues that have arisen after the terrorist attacks of 9/11,” Savage explained.
He writes about executive power, the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba, and how a president deals with suspected terrorists. President-elect Donald Trump has said he would bring back waterboarding and more other controversial interrogation techniques.
“And unlike some proponents of those policies, he doesn’t mince words, he acknowledges they’re torture, and revels in it,” Savage said. “He says torture works and even if it doesn’t, they deserve it anyway because they’re terrorists.”
Savage says Trump has also said he will place more prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, a facility Pres. Barack Obama has tried to shut down. Savage says no matter what policies Trump enacts, his administration will most likely be vastly different than previous administrations.
