Signs like this will have to be changed.

Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne will soon have a much shorter name. The Purdue Board of Trustees announced Friday that as the school splits into two universities, the campus will be known as Purdue University Fort Wayne.

The renaming process will start immediately, which will mean everything from changing signs to creating new letterheads. But Purdue trustees say it won’t officially become the new name of the university until July 1, 2018.

Purdue President Mitch Daniels says it was an easy decision because the majority of the community supported that name.

“I wanted what people here wanted, especially on a decision like that. I was just glad, very glad, that there seemed to be such a clear consensus,” Daniels said.

He says it will likely be called Purdue Fort Wayne as a shorter alternative.

There was no mention of whether any other details would change, like the school’s mascot, but other branch campuses of Purdue have separate mascots.

The majority of degrees offered out of IPFW will become Purdue Fort Wayne degrees, but Indiana University will take over health science degrees. IU trustees recently approved a name change to Indiana University Fort Wayne, which will also take effect in July of next year.
