Additional Cooling Center Opens With Heat Wave

National Weather Service/Northern Indiana

With temperatures forecast to rise through the mid-90s from Friday afternoon until Saturday evening, Fort Wayne city officials are making plans for residents’ safety.

Beginning Friday, the lobby of the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory, at 1100 S. Calhoun St., will serve as a cooling station in addition to the facility provided by The Rescue Mission.

The cooling station at the conservatory will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Friday and Saturday and then from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Located at 301 W. Superior St., The Rescue Mission serves as the primary cooling station for Fort Wayne. Men, women and families are welcome from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. when temperatures reach 80 degrees.

Along with the high temperatures forecast for the weekend, humidity is expected to climb as well.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for Allen, DeKalb, Noble, Steuben LaGrange, Whitley, Kosciusko, Adams, Wells, Huntington, Grant and Blackford counties in Indiana. Additional counties in Michigan and Ohio are also under the watch.

With the increased humidity, it will feel like it is between 105 and 110 degrees outside, according to the National Weather Service. The very young, elderly, those with breathing difficulties and those without air conditioning are particularly vulnerable.
