March 11: Northeast Indiana Slowly Turning Blue

Northeast Indiana continues to go “blue” on the Indiana coronavirus dashboard, demonstrating continued improvement in COVID-19 numbers.

Even though positivity rates have gone up in many counties over the past couple of days, the scores are also based on cases per 100,000 and the numbers of new cases remains low, according to the Indiana Department of Health.

There are only 40 northeast Indiana residents hospitalized with the illness, and only 4 percent of the region’s ICU beds are occupied by COVID patients.

The area’s 7-day positivity rate is at 4.6 percent, which is up slightly from Wednesday.

However, only DeKalb, Steuben, Noble, Huntington and Whitley counties remain in the yellow for community spread. That is the state’s second-best designation.

The remainder of northeast Indiana’s counties are in the blue.

One additional death was reported Thursday in Allen County, and there were 100 new positive cases reported in northeast Indiana.

Across Indiana, influenza activity remains far below the baseline for this time of year, and only four deaths due to the illness have been reported.

The CDC has attributed the decline in part to efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, such as masking and social distancing.

Northeast Indiana totals:

  • Adams County: 3 new cases for 3,286 total. No new deaths for 50 total. 7-day positivity rate at 5.2%.
