March 18: COVID Positivity Rate Creeps Back Up

Screenshot of the Indiana Department of Health

While no new COVID-19 deaths were reported throughout the region on Thursday, the average 7-day positivity rate in the area is back up over 5 percent.

Five percent is the number identified by the World Health Organization as dangerous for community spread of the illness.

Only Kosciusko, Noble and Wabash counties remain in the blue, the state’s safest designation for spread of the illness, based on 7-day positivity rates and cases per 100,000, according to the Indiana Department of Health.

There were 124 new cases of the illness reported in the area on Thursday.

However, the percentage of the population receiving the vaccine continues to increase through northeast Indiana.

Steuben County now has 25.4 percent having received at least the first shot of the COVID vaccine, with 17.3 percent of the population fully vaccinated.

LaGrange County has the lowest vaccination rate among its population, with just 7.7 percent of the county fully vaccinated.
