May 24: Area COVID Cases Continue To Drop

Screenshot of the Indiana Department of Health

Thirty-six new cases.

That is the number of new COVID-19 cases in northeast Indiana, and is among the lowest numbers reported since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 7-day positivity rate for the area stands at 4.1 percent, and four area counties reported no new cases on Monday, according to the Indiana Department of Health.

It is not uncommon for Monday reported numbers to be lower than the other days of each week, due to the lag in testing and reporting on Sunday into Monday.

But these numbers are low, even for a Monday.

According to the state’s dashboard for community spread, five area counties are in the state’s best category: Kosciusko, Huntington, Wabash, Wells, and Adams counties.

Wells County’s 7-day positivity rate stands at under 1 percent. The highest in the area remains Steuben County, at 7.5 percent.

There are 65 area residents hospitalized with the virus, among 751 statewide.

More than 2.4 million Hoosiers have been fully vaccinated against the illness.
