One Fort Wayne Community Schools teacher is in the top ten finalists for this year’s Indiana Teacher of the Year award.
Lisa Clegg is an English Language Learners teacher at Northrop High School. She was named one of two Teachers of the Year for 2020, but the state decided to honor all teachers in the state last year.
This year, the state let districts nominate teachers from 2021 and 2020 for the award. Spokeswoman for FWCS, Krista Stockman, says Clegg stands out because of how she works to connect with her students, even when they don’t share a language.
Stockman says one way Clegg does this is by connecting through food.
“No matter what language you speak, everybody has to eat and every culture has some really good food. And, so, they really have found ways to bond over food,” Stockman said.
She says FWCS has been participating in the state award for a long time and that their teachers are often in the top 25 or higher. This year, Clegg and FWCS 2021 Teacher of the Year Tia McFarthing both made it to the top 25.
