The majority of positive COVID-19 cases in Hoosier schools is among the population eligible for vaccination, according to the Indiana Department of Health.

The coronavirus vaccine is available to children and teens ages 12 and up, and that remains the lowest percentage of Indiana’s eligible population fully vaccinated.

And according to new data tracking cases as schools reopen around the state, it is Indiana’s teenagers - between the ages of 15 and 19 - that make up most of the positive COVID cases.

There were 466 new cases reported among students in Indiana on Friday, according to the state’s dashboard.

And the case counts vary widely in northeast Indiana schools.

There were 43 new student positive cases at East Noble High School, with a student population of 1,100. The school has been in e-learning from Friday until Wednesday, with no extra-curricular activities.

There are seven new cases at South Side High School in Fort Wayne, an ethnically-diverse school with an enrollment of 1,415.

Fort Wayne Community Schools has a mask requirement in place to start the new school year. East Noble Community Schools Corporation does not.

One new death was reported in Allen County on Monday from Sunday, and the area saw 343 new cases of the virus reported on Monday.

All of northeast Indiana remains in the state’s second-worst category for spread of the virus, with the exception of LaGrange County, which is in the second-best. The categories are determined by cases per 100,000 residents and 7-day positivity rates.
