Northwest Allen County Schools commits to ending mask mandate at the end of semester

The Northwest Allen County Schools board of trustees met over Zoom on Monday, November 8, 2021, to vote on the updated policy.

Northwest Allen County Schools updated their mask policy in response to vaccine availability for children five years and older at a board meeting Monday.

The updated policy removes all restrictions on students returning to extra-curricular activities following quarantine and doesn’t require masks at non-required school-sponsored events, such as sporting events, plays and concerts.

The district has been caught in controversy regarding their mask requirement for months. The new policy will continue the current mask mandate until the end of the current semester, but promises not to renew the mandate following that date.

The updated policy, which is an edited version of the policy passed a few weeks ago, says the district “will not extend the mask requirements beyond December 18 unless required to do so by federal, state or local order.”

The updated version passed unanimously.
